BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — More than eight months after a deadly crash on Interstate 95 claimed the life of an elderly woman, a West Palm Beach man has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide following a lengthy investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to investigators, 22-year-old Guy Augustin was taken into custody on June 10, 2026, on a felony charge of Vehicular Homicide in connection with a crash that occurred on the night of October 8, 2025, along southbound Interstate 95 near Gateway Boulevard in Boynton Beach.

Authorities said the crash happened at approximately 9:45 p.m. when Augustin was driving a BMW southbound on I-95. Investigators determined that he changed lanes and struck the rear portion of a Toyota Camry being driven by Martha Gutierrez. The impact caused both vehicles to leave their intended paths, with the Camry ultimately crashing into a concrete barrier. Gutierrez suffered critical injuries and was transported to Delray Medical Center, where she later passed away.

The investigation continued for months after the crash. During an interview with Florida Highway Patrol investigators, Augustin reportedly admitted that he had been traveling between 95 and 100 miles per hour in a posted 65-mile-per-hour zone and acknowledged that he had been following motorcycles too closely before the collision.

Investigators also interviewed a witness who reported seeing the BMW traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving through traffic moments before the crash occurred. The witness estimated the vehicle’s speed at approximately 80 miles per hour.

A key piece of evidence came from the BMW’s Event Data Recorder (EDR), commonly referred to as a vehicle’s “black box.” According to the affidavit, the data revealed the BMW was traveling at approximately 123 miles per hour five seconds before impact and remained above 117 miles per hour at the moment of the collision. Investigators noted there was no braking activity recorded prior to the crash. The data also indicated steering movements consistent with lane changes at extremely high speeds.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators concluded that Augustin was operating his vehicle in a reckless manner while traveling well over 100 miles per hour and weaving through traffic. The affidavit states investigators determined he was solely responsible for causing the crash and the death of Martha Gutierrez.

Based on the findings, authorities obtained a warrant charging Augustin with one count of Vehicular Homicide. He was arrested on June 10 and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail.

The case remains pending in Palm Beach County Circuit Court and Mr Guy should be considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and loved ones of Martha Gutierrez as they continue to mourn this tragic loss.
