More than 25 years after one of Palm Beach County’s most infamous school shootings, Nathaniel Brazill is approaching his scheduled release from a Florida prison in 2028.
Brazill was just 13 years old when he fatally shot Lake Worth Middle School teacher Barry Grunow on the last day of school in May 2000. The case shocked South Florida and drew national attention because of Brazill’s young age and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In 2001, a jury convicted Brazill of second-degree murder and aggravated assault. He was sentenced to 28 years in state prison, followed by probation. Prosecutors had originally sought a more severe punishment, while the defense argued that Brazill’s age and potential for rehabilitation should be considered.
According to prison records and multiple published reports, Brazill’s current release date is May 18, 2028. If released as scheduled, he will have spent nearly his entire adult life behind bars.
Over the years, Brazill has participated in educational and vocational programs while incarcerated. Reports indicate he earned his GED, completed paralegal training, and pursued additional legal studies during his time in prison.
Recent interviews have brought renewed attention to the case as the release date draws closer. In a 2025 interview from prison, Brazill expressed remorse for the events that occurred at Lake Worth Middle School and said he hopes to build a productive life after his release. The interview marked one of the most extensive public discussions about his future since his conviction.
The case continues to generate strong reactions throughout Palm Beach County. For many residents, educators, and former students, the shooting remains one of the most significant criminal cases in local history. The upcoming release is expected to reignite conversations about juvenile sentencing, rehabilitation, accountability, and the lasting impact violent crimes have on victims’ families and communities.
Unless there are future changes to his sentence or release status, Nathaniel Brazill is expected to leave state custody in May 2028 after serving nearly 28 years in prison.
