What happened: A man was taken into custody following a confrontation at a popular bar on Clematis Street, according to the West Palm Beach Police Department.
Background: WPBPD says that Dannie Lee Gaskins Jr., 24, was taken into custody following an altercation at Lost Weekend located at 526 Clematis Street in West Palm Beach. Police say the incident happened on Sunday at around 4 a.m.
when Gaskins allegedly broke a mirror in the downstairs men’s restroom. As security officers at the bar were investigating the damage, they also attempted to escort Gaskins from the establishment, but WPBPD says that he became argumentative and resisted leaving.
Gaskins also refused to show identification, even after being told he was banned from the bar. WPBPD says that Gaskins swung the handgun and struck one of the security guards just above their left eye.
When police officers arrived, they detained Gaskins and recovered the firearm. He initially claimed self-defense, saying that he accidentally broke the mirror after feeling unwell, and that the security officers pushing him while escorting him from the bar.
Gaskins did admit to striking one of the guards with his handgun, however.
