Palm Beach County Burglary & Break-In Update: Doorbell leads to arrest in Delray Beach porch package theft

What happened: A man was taken into custody for burglary and theft charges in Delray Beach , according to the Delray Beach Police Department.

Background: DBPD says that Willie Griffin III, 57, was taken into custody last week for an alleged burglary on Sept. 16 at a Delray Beach residence while the homeowner was outside of the country.

The affidavit says that a doorbell camera recorded Griffin entering the property through a gate, taking two packages from the front door and leaving. One of the packages reportedly contained an employer-issued check worth $3,600, and the other was an Amazon delivery of books worth about $23.65.

DBPD says that Griffin came to the department later that day to speak with the Homeless Outreach Team, and officers said that his clothing and physical appearance seemed consistent with the person from the doorbell footage. He then described himself as a “treasure hunter” to authorities.

Griffin is being charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure, and grand theft between $750 and $5,000.
