Palm Beach County deputies arrested 29-year-old Thomas Faferko-Schmedes following a violent family sh00ting that left his grandfather dead and three other relatives seriously injured Tuesday evening.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a sh00ting shortly before 5 p.m. on June 23, 2026. Multiple 911 callers reported that several people had been shot inside a residence.
When deputies arrived, they encountered one of the victims suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. The victim told investigators that his brother, Thomas Faferko-Schmedes, had shot multiple family members inside the home following a verbal dispute.
Authorities say the suspect allegedly opened fire on everyone inside the residence.
Deputies quickly located additional victims, including the suspect’s mother, who had sustained gunshot wounds to her neck and shoulder areas. Another female victim suffered superficial injuries. All three surviving victims were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment.
Investigators said deputies eventually entered the home and discovered Thomas Faferko, the suspect’s grandfather, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.
According to the affidavit, responding officers encountered Thomas Faferko-Schmedes outside the residence armed with a shotgun. Deputies ordered him to place the weapon on the ground and raise his hands. He complied and was taken into custody without further incident.
Investigators noted that while in custody, the suspect allegedly made numerous unusual statements, including claiming he was the victim, a military veteran, a doctor, and a surgeon. Due to his condition and demeanor, detectives were unable to conduct a formal interview.
During the investigation, a longtime family acquaintance told detectives the suspect had a history of mental health struggles and had allegedly made threats toward family members in the past. Authorities also learned there had been ongoing family tensions before the violence erupted.
Investigators say Thomas Faferko-Schmedes now faces:
- One count of First-Degree Murder
- Three counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder
The investigation remains active.
