What happened: Thursday marked a new era of public safety in the Town of Jupiter with the launch of the Jupiter Fire Rescue Department, which will now provide fire and emergency services to the town’s 61,000 residents.
Background: The new department is operating out of three fire stations, with 94 operational personnel and at least 23 firefighters on duty during each shift. In addition to fire and emergency medical response, the new department will also take over fire prevention and inspection services.
the department’s first-year operating budget is about $25 million dollars, roughly $10 million dollars less than the $35 million dollars town leaders says it would have cost to continue services with Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. Town leaders also say creating an independent fire department will strengthen coordination between Jupiter Fire Rescue and the Jupiter Police Department.
“The infrastructure is built, the personnel are trained, the licenses are secured, and the crews are staged," said Fire Chief Darrel Donatto. "We are on time, on budget, and ready to serve.".
