What happened: A Macy’s employee is accused of stealing more than $900 in merchandise from the Boca Raton store where he worked, with investigators alleging the thefts stretched over several months.
Background: 63-year-old Clive Michael Downer was taken into custody Friday after loss prevention officers confronted him about merchandise allegedly taken from the store at 5700 W. Glades Road, according to a Boca Raton Police Department probable cause affidavit.
Downer, who worked as a painter, allegedly began stealing merchandise on April 1, concealing items on a portable clothing rack where he kept his painting tools before leaving without paying, investigators said. Loss prevention officers reportedly reviewed surveillance footage documenting previous incidents.
Investigators said he selected four items, concealed them in a plastic bag, and left the store without paying at 6:52 a.m. He then placed the bag inside a Macy’s work vehicle.
Officers confronted Downer nearly three hours later and found the merchandise, valued at $124, on the vehicle’s front passenger seat, according to the affidavit. Investigators said the total value of merchandise allegedly stolen since April was $934.08.
Downer reportedly admitted taking items he should not have and described how he concealed the merchandise and placed it in the vehicle.
