Palm Beach County Theft & Property Crime Update: Man accused of depositing two fraudulent checks and spending funds before they bounced

What happened: A man in Belle Glade is accused of depositing two fraudulent checks worth thousands of dollars, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Background: PBSO says that Ferrell Bowie, 25, was taken into custody on Tuesday following an investigation into two alleged fraudulent check deposits. Bowie deposited a $5,000 check on May 18 of this year into his First Bank account, and a $5,992 check 8 days later.

Both checks were deposited through the bank’s drive-through, and employees said that Bowie’s identity was confirmed both times. However, First Bank reported a loss of $5,992, and Seacoast Bank reported a $5,000 loss connected to one of the checks, prompting a closer look at the deposits.

Bowie had used the money from the checks before they were returned for being altered, according to PBSO. It depends; here's the law Investigators said the checks appeared to use numbers from legitimate checks, but that one authentic check had been stolen from the mail and altered.

It was then determined that Bowie was not a client, and that neither of the fraudulent checks had been issued to him. He allegedly told PBSO investigators that the checks were accident-settlement payments, and he promised to bring cash to cover the negative balance.

However, he never repaid the money.
