What happened: An alleged crime may give a new meaning to the term "wire fraud." A West Palm Beach man was taken into custody after he allegedly claimed to work for an electrical company to obtain wire charged to the company’s account, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Background: Victor Vazquez Abreu is accused of going to a K&M Electric Supply store in Royal Palm Beach on Oct. 8 and saying he worked for Wave Electrical.
An employee wrote up an order under the company’s account, and Abreu was directed to the supplier’s Riviera Beach location to pick up the wire, the affidavit says. Surveillance video reportedly showed a man matching Abreu’s description loading two 125-foot coils of MC cable into a white service van.
The wire was valued at $1,164.69, and the invoice was signed “Victor,” according to the affidavit. Wave Electrical representatives told investigators that Abreu did not work for the company and was not authorized to pick up or approve the order.
K&M Electric Supply credited the company’s account for the transaction. 13, Abreu allegedly returned to the Riviera Beach store and sought more cable.
An employee challenged his claim that he worked for Wave Electrical, and Abreu left without taking anything, the affidavit says.
