BELLE GLADE, Fla. — Two Belle Glade residents have been arrested following an extensive Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office investigation into allegations that three children were repeatedly harmed over several years before eventually being placed in a safe and stable adoptive home.
Authorities arrested Lewis B. Taylor, 49, and Jacqueline Smith, 58, after detectives gathered evidence from multiple interviews, forensic examinations, and statements provided by the children and their adoptive parent.
According to investigators, the case began earlier this year after the children, who are now living with an adoptive family, felt safe enough to discuss traumatic experiences from their past.
Detectives conducted separate interviews with each child and said their accounts were consistent with one another. Investigators also reviewed additional evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to authorities, the children reported repeated inappropriate acts involving their private parts while they were staying at a residence in Belle Glade years earlier.
Investigators allege the children had previously attempted to tell adults what was happening but were repeatedly returned to the same environment.
The children’s adoptive mother told detectives the children struggled with nightmares, anxiety, and emotional trauma when they first entered her care several years ago. She said counseling, support services, and a stable home environment eventually helped them become comfortable enough to discuss their experiences.
Authorities said all three children independently identified Lewis B. Taylor, whom they knew as “LT,” as the primary suspect in the case.
Detectives also determined Jacqueline Smith was responsible for the children’s care and wellbeing during portions of that time and allegedly failed to protect them despite being aware of the circumstances surrounding the abuse.
Based on evidence gathered throughout the investigation, detectives established probable cause to arrest both Taylor and Smith.
Taylor is facing multiple life felony charges involving children under the age of 12, while Smith faces felony charges related to her alleged role in allowing the abuse to occur and failing to protect the children.
The case remains active and will continue through the Palm Beach County court system.
