WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A 30-year-old West Palm Beach man has been arrested months after detectives say they identified him as the suspect in a deadly shooting that happened earlier this year in the city’s Northwood area.

According to the West Palm Beach Police Department, Joshua Daniel Brown was taken into custody on charges of First-Degree Premeditated Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon following a lengthy homicide investigation involving surveillance footage, cellphone records, forensic evidence, and witness statements.

Police say the investigation began on the night of April 2, 2025, when officers responded to reports of gunfire near an apartment complex off Henrietta Avenue. Dispatchers had also received a ShotSpotter alert moments earlier indicating a possible gunshot in the area.

When officers arrived, they discovered 31-year-old Renelle Lubin suffering from a gunshot wound to the head in the rear parking lot of the property. Officers and paramedics attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but Lubin later died from his injuries.

Investigators recovered a single 9mm shell casing beneath the victim’s body and quickly began reviewing surveillance footage from nearby cameras. Detectives learned Lubin had arrived at the location driving a black Ford Explorer.

According to the probable cause affidavit, city surveillance cameras and license plate reader technology later tracked a white Jeep Compass with a black roof entering the area shortly before the shooting and rapidly leaving the scene afterward.

Witnesses told detectives they heard a single gunshot and then observed a white male suspect, described as medium build and wearing dark clothing, carrying what appeared to be a rifle-style firearm before getting into a dark-colored vehicle and leaving the area.

Detectives later traced the Jeep Compass to Brown through vehicle registration records. Investigators say they located the vehicle hours later and observed Brown returning home driving the SUV.

Authorities also reportedly uncovered cellphone evidence showing Brown and Lubin communicated several times shortly before the shooting. Investigators said location data from Brown’s cellphone allegedly placed him near the scene at the time of the incident and tracked his movements afterward.

During the investigation, detectives executed multiple search warrants and seized Brown’s cellphone and clothing believed to have been worn the night of the shooting. Police say additional digital evidence recovered from cloud storage accounts showed Brown with another individual just hours before the homicide occurred.

The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner later ruled Lubin’s death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head.

According to investigators, Brown is a convicted felon and was prohibited from possessing firearms. Authorities noted he had previously served time in prison and had been released from the Florida Department of Corrections in late 2024.

Brown is currently being held without bond on the murder charge. Bond on the firearm possession charge was set at $60,000.

The case remains under investigation by the West Palm Beach Police Department.
