DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — Rapper XXXTentacion was only 20 years old when a trip to a Broward County motorcycle dealership ended in a robbery, a fatal shooting and one of South Florida’s most closely followed murder trials.
XXXTentacion, whose legal name was Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy, was leaving RIVA Motorsports in Deerfield Beach on June 18, 2018, when a dark SUV blocked his BMW.
Surveillance video showed two masked men exit the SUV and confront Onfroy while he sat inside his vehicle. He was sh0t, and the attackers escaped with a Louis Vuitton bag containing approximately $50,000 in cash.
Onfroy died at the scene.
FOUR MEN WERE IDENTIFIED
Investigators initially identified Dedrick Devonshay Williams through surveillance footage showing him inside RIVA Motorsports shortly before the robbery. Williams and Robert Allen had entered the dealership while Onfroy was shopping and purchased masks before returning to the waiting SUV.
The investigation eventually led authorities to four men:
Michael Boatwright
Dedrick Devonshay Williams
Trayvon Newsome
Robert Allen
According to testimony presented at trial, Boatwright and Newsome approached Onfroy’s BMW while Williams drove the SUV used to block his escape. Allen remained inside the vehicle.
Allen later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed robbery. As part of his agreement with prosecutors, he testified against Boatwright, Williams and Newsome.
Allen told jurors that the four men decided to rob Onfroy after recognizing him at the dealership. He identified Boatwright as the person who shot the rapper.
THE EVIDENCE PRESENTED AT TRIAL
Prosecutors built their case using surveillance recordings, cellphone-location information, forensic evidence and photographs taken after the crime.
Boatwright’s fingerprints were found on the outside of the getaway SUV, and his DNA was recovered from a mask found inside it. His phone contained photographs showing him posing with large amounts of cash several hours after the murder.
Cellphone evidence also tracked the defendants’ movements from near RIVA Motorsports to an apartment complex after the shooting.
The state presented videos and photographs showing some of the defendants displaying stacks of $100 bills following the robbery.
Defense attorneys challenged Allen’s credibility and questioned whether the physical evidence proved their clients committed the crime. Jurors ultimately rejected those arguments.
THREE CONVICTIONS -THREE LIFE SENTENCES
On March 20, 2023, a Broward County jury convicted Boatwright, Williams and Newsome of first-degree murder and armed robbery.
All three received life sentences in April 2023.
Allen received a substantially reduced sentence after pleading guilty and cooperating with prosecutors.
APPEALS REJECTED
Newsome appealed his conviction, but Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeal affirmed the judgment on February 20, 2025.
Boatwright also challenged his conviction and sentence. He argued that his trial should have been separated from those of his co-defendants and raised objections concerning search warrants, testimony and other evidence.
On July 9, 2025, the Fourth District Court of Appeal rejected Boatwright’s arguments and affirmed his conviction and sentence on every issue.
The appellate court concluded that the trial judge properly handled testimony concerning statements made by Williams. The court also found that any potential error would have been harmless because Allen’s testimony and the remaining evidence independently established Boatwright’s involvement.
A BROWARD COUNTY CASE REMEMBERED WORLDWIDE
XXXTentacion was raised in Broward County and developed an international audience through music that frequently addressed depression, isolation and personal turmoil.
His murder immediately attracted worldwide attention, but the criminal case remained rooted in Deerfield Beach, the Broward Sheriff’s Office investigation and the Broward County courthouse.
